Africanized Bees in South Florida: What You Need to Know
Understanding the difference between Africanized and European honeybees and how to stay safe.

What Are Africanized Honeybees?
Africanized honeybees are a hybrid of European honeybees and a bee subspecies originally introduced to South America, which later spread north over several decades and became established in parts of the southern United States, including Florida. Visually, Africanized honeybees are essentially identical to European honeybees. There's no reliable way to tell the two apart just by looking at them.
Behavior Differences
The most important practical difference isn't appearance, it's behavior. Africanized colonies tend to respond more quickly and in greater numbers when a hive is disturbed, and they may continue defending the area for longer afterward compared to a typical European colony. This doesn't mean every colony you encounter is Africanized or that every sting risk is severe, but it does mean caution matters with any unknown colony.
Why You Can't Just Wait and See
Because the two types of bees look the same, the only responsible approach with an unknown colony is to treat it carefully and avoid disturbing it until a professional has assessed it. Mowing near a hive entrance, banging on a wall where bees are nesting, or attempting to spray or remove a colony without protective equipment can trigger a defensive response before anyone realizes what they're dealing with.
Staying Safe Around an Unknown Colony
A few simple precautions go a long way:
- Keep children and pets away from any area with regular bee activity
- Avoid loud yard equipment or vibration-heavy work near a suspected hive
- Never throw objects at a swarm or nest, or spray it with water or chemicals
- If bees do become agitated, move indoors quickly rather than swatting at them
- Leave removal to a professional with the right protective equipment and experience
When to Call a Professional
Any time you find an established colony on your property, whether it's in a wall, a tree, or underground, the safest move is to have it assessed and removed by someone trained to handle bees safely, rather than attempting to identify or manage it yourself.
Ben & Bees provides safe, professional bee removal throughout Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties, and we treat every colony with the same careful precautions regardless of species. If you've spotted a hive or swarm on your property, request a free inspection below rather than approaching it yourself.
